HISTORY
The site known today as Burgoyne Village was once the private home of successful businessman Mr. Charles Burgoyne. Mr. Burgoyne, who had just married his third wife, moved down to Daytona Beach from New York and built a large castle inspired mansion on the site in 1896. He immediately became an important civic leader in the Daytona Beach community. By 1899 he had become Mayor of Daytona Beach and Commodore of the Daytona Yacht Club. In 1915, he built a large community civic center and was known for his generosity in the community. Charles Burgoyne suffered a heart attack in 1917, and his widow Mary Burgoyne, who was sixteen years his younger, sealed herself in her home and was rarely seen for the next thirty years.
By 1939 the property had fallen into disrepair and Burgoyne’s fortune had dried up. The property was purchased by Jacksonville, Florida based businessman William Radford Lovett, who gave Mary Burgoyne a year to arrange her affairs and move out. Demolition on the Burgoyne mansion began shortly thereafter, followed by the construction of the brick and masonry buildings that occupy the property today. By the late 1940’s the block was a bustling commercial district with department stores, a theatre and another of Mr. Lovett’s investments, a Piggly Wiggly grocery.
The 1970’s saw the opening of the Volusia Mall and a decline in the Beach Street commercial district. Many of the buildings had fallen into disrepair, and much of the property was vacant through the 1980’s. In 1990 the Lovett family renovated the building facades and worked with the City of Daytona to revitalize the streets, sidewalks, and landscaping. Tenants began to return, and by 1995 the property was 100% occupied with a waiting list for prospective tenants. Burgoyne’s success continues today in 2016 with a wide range of tenancy including restaurants, antique and furniture stores, office space, professional services, and a motorcycle dealership. Burgoyne Properties will continue to invest in the evolution of this historic site that will help make this special place a destination for years to come.
